Morning All

Coffee morning: A very busy morning at the Arts Centre on Saturday so a huge thank you to everyone who managed to supply some very edible edibles, helped out in the café and popped in to spend some dosh! We took, by the way, £137.70; after a small deduction to the Arts Centre; this money goes straight into our coffers! Robin looked pleased!

So, thank you, (in no particular order), to Elaine, Brenda, Terry, Robin, Maurice, Stan, Sue, Rhona, Barry, Jenny, Michael and Freda. This is what we call a team effort! If we’ve missed anyone out – many apologies. Also, it was really nice to see Lucienne, as sprightly as ever and Vernon and his wife making a visit to Garstang! Even Bob Sapey popped in!

Humanity Competition. Many thanks, also, to all members who managed to enter prints and digital images into the competition to be judged. We thought that Carol Watson did an excellent job spending time on each photograph and giving her thoughts, her positives and her constructive criticism to them all. Attached are the full results for you to look at.

And, a big well done to Tim for not only winning 2 of the 4 sections (digital monochrome and digital colour) but his image – Spinning with Grandma – winning the overall prize – ‘best in show’! Congratulations Tim!

Attached to this newsletter is an image from our club member Ted  – from South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. He says: In preparation for the talk on the 20th of March … “Shackleton & South Georgia” a picture from Grytviken July 2023…Thanks Ted, so glad you are still receiving and reading the newsletters!

Afternoon All

Heatwave comes to an end today, at lunchtime, according to the BBC; so, a little late today ‘cos I’ve been gardening! Thunder now rumbling around here in Forton. I have noticed lately that there are quite a few fallen leaves on the ground – signs of the approaching autumn.

Many thanks to all members who managed to put together 12 – in – 12 and show them during our last meeting – great effort; a new ’12 month mission’ for members is under development/construction – news soon! If you have an ideas, please let us know!

Internal competitions

Many thanks to Lewis for his reminder on how to enter images for our 5 internal competitions, the Projected Digital Images – PDI’s.

A few gentle reminders:

• In each of the Club competitions a member may submit up to a maximum of nine entries, with no more than three entries allowed in any one section.

• There are 4 sections: (a) Colour Prints (b) Monochrome Prints (c) Colour Projected Digital Images (d) Monochrome Projected Digital Images.

• In order to ensure that images are projected properly by the club’s equipment, DPI entries to the clubs’ competitions must be supplied in jpeg format and in sRGB colour space.

• The maximum dimensions of the image must be 1600 pixels (horizontal) x 1200 pixels (vertical).

• Digital images should be submitted on a USB stick (which will be returned) and members should create a new folder for each competition, with the folder name being your name followed by the competition name and date.

• For example: Mike Jenner Events Cup 2023 Monochrome

• For example: Mike Jenner Events Cup 2023 Colour

• So, in the above 2 examples, I’ve created 2 folders because I’m entering some monochrome PDI’s and some colour PDI’s.

• Filenames must be a maximum of 40 characters and contain a title and your competition number. Please use a capital letter at the start of each title word and insert an underscore between the title and your competition number.

• Example: Lytham Pier_123.jpg (where 123 is your competition number).

If you are still unsure/confused PLEASE email in or chat to us at the next meeting. We are here to help you and we want every member to understand the ‘system’ and enjoy the competitions. Don’t be afraid or be put off!

If you do make a mistake, we will help you for next time.

This is a club for everyone!

All the competition rules are on our website – click on Information and then look under Club competition information and then click on Competition rules.

Morning All

Just as I’ve got my warmer coats ready summer has broken out; heat wave, momentarily, upon us. Great for us retirees, warm/hot and quiet!

I walked along the local canal (Lancaster) yesterday and Dragonflies abound; far too quick though, the best one was just out of focus! Never mind practice makes perfect – so I’m told!

Anyway……

Trip to Heysham and area with Morecambe Camera Club (MCC).

We had a very enjoyable trip out to Heysham, last Thursday, and successfully met up with 7/8 members of MCC, and, most importantly, the rain kept away!

They took us a walk incorporating – a look over Heysham Port and Power station, The ‘Ship Sculpture, a walk along the coast overlooking Half Moon Bay, past the Seaside Medieval Chapel and finished up at St Peter’s Church. There the light ran out!

Big thanks here to Graham (Dean) – who, incidentally, is giving us a talk next February 14th – and other members for their time and trouble in looking after us – they were all very welcoming and it was great to chat to other members of a different club.

‘Plein Air,’ yesterday, in Garstang.

Many thanks to all members (there were 8 of us) who had the time to roam around the town chatting (and maybe interrupting!) some or all of the 34 artists who took part in this, now annual, competition. It was a cracking day weather wise and atmospherically and busy; local trades people must have been very pleased!

If we have time this coming Wednesday, we will show a selection of the images taken and we will anyway send all of them to the Vanessa, at the Arts Centre, for them to use or delete!

  • First 7 images are the formal entry, the 8th is held for tie breaks.

Michael is organising our entries – thanks Michael! – so….

and hopefully we can, as a club, put in an entry together.

September Exhibition:

This is the clubs’ exhibition, held in the Arts Centre, for all 1st, 2nd and third print winners PLUS any print that received a commended or highly commended award in last season’s internal competitions.

Maurice is organising this exhibition (many thanks, as always, Maurice), and he would like all prints to be handed in, at the latest, by Wednesday 13th September. You can bring them in this coming Wednesday, 6th September.

Please make the effort to bring these in as it is a great ‘show-case’ for the club and the exhibition lasts from Saturday 23rd September to Thursday 19th October.

PLEASE – on the back of each print, label it with the title, your name, which competition and the prize. This is a great help to Maurice!

Up and coming programme of events:

Wednesday September 6th – First meeting of the new ‘season.’ Our first club meeting of the ‘season.’ We will be welcoming you all back to the regular club get-togethers and, hopefully, welcoming some new members.

Programme for the evening will include, amongst many things, the 12 – in – 12 (or any number, really!), project launched last September plus other images.

So, Sue will be bringing some in on 6th September and they are only £8.50 each – what a giveaway!

Finally

As mentioned last week: It’s that time of year folks! Subscriptions (sorry) are due; just to remind you the fees for this year are £52 which includes the £28 paid to the Arts Centre.

That’s all folks, and enjoy the late summer!

Newsletter 27/08/23

Morning All

Here’s me thinking of gardening this morning; heavy showers and meteorological calendar always places the beginning of autumn on September 1; so much for our summer, eh?

Oaklands

Huge thanks to Maurice and Freda for their ‘sterling’ efforts last Sunday at Oaklands. Yes, the attendance was down but we had a good time chatting to quite a few people in a very convivial and (almost) hot weather and certainly a warm atmosphere. Possible members? The proof, as always, will be on the evening of the 6th.

Message from Paul Ferguson (Coordinator, Oaklands) – Everyone at Oaklands want to thank you for your attendance on Sunday. We were so lucky with the weather and lots of people have said how much they enjoyed the day. In particular our residents had a great time and that is always the most important thing for us.

We were unfortunate that the attendance was low and we hope that this did not spoil the day for you given how much this will have restricted your opportunities to showcase your brilliant work.

Notices

Bob Sapey:

We had a chat to Bob at Oaklands (regarding the astrophotography for the Milky Way photography) and he is keeping a beady eye on all weather conditions so, watch this space. He has suggested, as well, to have a practice ‘set-up’ of photography gear in daylight sometime soon, only for an hour or so; it’s just better to ensure all is well in daylight! – I’ll keep all posted on any arrangements.

Just to remind: We will be aiming to take photos with a wide angle lens (16-24 FF) with a 20-30 second exposure at an ISO of about 3200, so tripod is essential.

We talked about going to Ribblehead Viaduct so I guess we’d be leaving Garstang about 9pm.

So, if you’re still interested in trying some Milky Way photography – let us know and we will keep you on a circulation list. Don’t forget it will probably mean a bit ‘last minute dot com’!

Garstang Club Competition:

This was a suggestion from Stan, a while ago – thanks Stan!

We discussed this at some length at the recent committee meeting and Michael (Orr) very kindly volunteered to coordinate and ‘steer’ this idea. THANKS Michael!

In a nutshell, the idea is for the camera club to arrange a photography competition, in Garstang, and after much discussion it was decided to limit it to the schools in Garstang (separated into 2/3 age group sections) and the images must be taken on an iPhone.

This is obviously our first go at something like this so it will take, I’m sure, quite a bit of planning. So, if any member would like to assist Michael in this project, please email in or chat to us on the first meeting on 6th September. We are looking, in theory for 2/3 volunteers, so that any workload is not arduous and it should be great fun.

It will help ‘spot-light’ the club, and we think it will, maybe, introduce photography to a younger audience and hopefully ‘fire’ their imagination! And, although it will probably not increase the membership, maybe it will rub off on parents, who knows!

Bob Robinson:

Please find attached the rules and guidelines for The Bob Robinson Trophy, to be held on 8 October 2023.

Online entry opens on Saturday 26th August and closes on Saturday 17th September 2023.

Michael is organising our entries – thanks again Michael! – so….

The attached is hopefully self-explanatory! If not please email in on the usual email address – info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk and hopefully we can answer any queries. More discussion, if needed, during our first meeting.

We have attached a full list of all entries (both prints and DPI’s) so if you can’t remember please check in out!

This list does, as mentioned, include the PDI competition winners as well, and we have always understood, print copies of these are eligible for display.

Please make the effort to bring these in as it is a great ‘show-case’ for the club and the exhibition lasts from Saturday 23rd September to Thursday 19th October.

PLEASE – on the back of each print, label it with the title, your name, which competition and the prize. This is a great help to Maurice!

Club Website:

We are revamping and renewing some parts of our website and one of the areas is the ‘Members Gallery.’ The committee have decided this area needs some updating so all images presently on display will, by the end of September, be deleted.

So…. any members who wishes to have up to 6 of their images displayed will be asked to send them in at an appropriate date in the near future. More information will follow soon.

Calendar

Have you bought ‘THE’ calendar yet? If not please do so as all monies raised will go towards funding the Arts Centre, on which we all depend!

So, Sue will be bringing some in on 6th September and they are only £8.50 each – what a giveaway!

Up and coming programme of events:

Wednesday August 30th – No meeting.

Thursday August 31st – Trip to Heysham and area with Morecambe Camera Club (MCC), 7.00 – 9pm. Please note the time change. Thanks to all who have put their name forward and below are directions if you are travelling there solo!

If you put 36 Knowlys Road LA3 2PF into Google maps, it will probably direct you from M6 jctn 34 along the Bay Gateway. You will cross Morecambe Road and go through 2 more sets of traffic lights. Shortly after 2nd set of lights take 3rd exit at a roundabout (signed retail park and Vickers Industrial Estate. Take 2nd exit at next roundabout then follow windy road for about a mile. Turn left at traffic lights onto Heysham Road. Turn right shortly after pelican crossing and you’re on Knowly Road. Hope this makes sense.

If anyone uses What3Words then enter ///clocks.shirt.stress

Last Call: Please email in to us so that we can begin to arrange car sharing, if required, and let MCC know numbers.

Saturday September 2nd – ‘Paint Garstang’. This is the 2nd ‘Plein Air’ open Art Competition organised by the Arts Centre. ‘Painting’ begins at 9am until 4pm and the judging and presentation of prizes is 4pm – 5pm.

They have asked us, at the camera club, to capture the day’s events as part of the occasion. We would really appreciate members to take part, even if only for a couple of hours! Considering the current weather conditions, it may give a whole new meaning to the term ‘Water’ colours!’

If you are willing to partake in this venture, please just let us know – cheers! Many thanks to all who have ‘signed-up’ again, many thanks to all those who are bringing their cameras!

Wednesday September 6th – First meeting of the new ‘season.’ Our first club meeting of the ‘season.’ We will be welcoming you all back to the regular club get-togethers and, hopefully, welcoming some new members.

Programme for the evening will include, amongst many things, the 12 – in – 12 (or any number, really!), project launched last September.

Morning All

Glad we didn’t book a short break to Paris this weekend!

Not impressed by the weather – I know the garden needed rain but there’s rain and there’s rain! And the forecast for the next 10 days……! Maybe photographic opportunities?

Many thanks to all members who ventured out last Wednesday to Cockersand Abbey and Plover Scar Lighthouse there were 10/11 of us! It was an interesting evening; chilly, very breezy but we were rewarded with an excellent sunset, albeit at 9.47 plus!

Just a reminder: will all who took part please bring in some images (or send them to Mike), – good, bad or indifferent, to ‘show and tell’ this coming Wednesday, 5th July. It will be good to see everyone’s interpretation of similar ‘scenes.’ Ta!

Message from Ray Lee:

Hi. I’m just enquiring if one of your members may be interested in doing some promotional photos of a small property in Garstang that we are looking to let out as a holiday let.

Best regards

Ray

If you are interested, please email back in to us and we will forward your interest to Ray directly.

Message from Lewis: Reminder!

You may recall that a few months ago we were approached about the possibility of supplying photographs to be displayed in the new residential/care home being built in Bowgreave.

They have decided to ask for 5 xA3 photographs to be displayed one in each lounge. We have agreed to send digital copies of photographs to Sheron.

The remit is fairly loose- photographs taken in or around Garstang including, for example, the local area of the Fylde coast, Bleasdale, Forest of Bowland etc. They need to be suitable for display in this environment. We guess that content and subject will be deemed more important than technical excellence. If you have any photos, you think would be suitable and would like to offer for this worthwhile venture, please email them to the club email by Saturday July 8th.

Many thanks to those members who have already sent their images in.

Notes from a Meeting of the Executive Committee of

Garstang & District Arts:

  • You will be pleased to note that the Schoolroom will be open and in use from this coming Tuesday, 4th July.
  • The Garstang Summer Celebration of Arts and Music starts next Thursday, 6th July, with the first of the Lunchtime Concerts. The printed programme of events will be ready soon but everything is listed on the Arts Centre website.
  • Garstang Calendar 2024 – just a few amendments needed and Muriel will visit Colin Cross to finalise the printing. These will be on sale at Garstang Show.

Up and coming programme of events:

Wednesday 5th July: Please ‘show and tell’ about any images you may wish to share, including those from the previous week. Please bring them along on a USB ‘stick’ or send them to me and I will add them to the PowerPoint presentation. Plus, a small presentation on 2023 Bird Photography award winners with backstories, some interesting winning Travel Images (definitely not holiday snaps!), and other images which, I hope, you will enjoy!

Wednesday 12th July: Events Cup, 4th destination, is Brockholes; Map attached for your perusal.

Message from Maurice:

Camera Club exhibition. We will be exhibiting all winning prints, colour and monochrome, from last year’s 5 interval competitions; these will include 1st, 2nd and 3rd print winners plus all highly commended and commended ones. They will be hung in the Arts Centre on Saturday 23rd September and the exhibition will run until Thursday 19th October.

If you have forgotten (!) all the winners are on our website, under Competition Results.

So, please, begin to dig out those winners and set them aside ‘cos we will send out, in a future newsletter, when we need them in. Many thanks.

Up and coming programme of events:

Wednesday 28th June: Camera club outing to Cockersand Abbey and Plover Scar Lighthouse. Details: there are several attachments: where we are going to meet (Stork Hotel indicated plus an arrow) and either car share or drive in a convoy from there: and, the actual route (in 2 parts) to the car parking area.

We will meet at 7.15pm (opposite the Stork Hotel) and drive to the car park at 7.30pm. High tide is at 8.13pm and the weather appears, at the time of typing this, to be good with the sunset at 9.47pm.

It’s a great walk and not too far and will take in Cockersand Abbey and The Plover Scar Lighthouse amongst other possible bird/wildlife; nothing guaranteed though!

ANY problems or questions just email in as usual – ta.

Wednesday 5th July: Please ‘show and tell’ about any images you may wish to share, including those from the previous week. Please bring them along on a USB ‘stick’ or send them to me and I will add them to the PowerPoint presentation. Plus, a small presentation on 2023 Bird Photography award winners with backstories and other winners!

Wednesday 12th July: Events Cup, 4th destination, is Brockholes; further info later. This outing is instead of the weekly meeting at the Arts Centre.

Sunday 16th July: British Cycling ‘Lancaster GP’. Details in last week’s newsletter.

Wednesday 19th July: to be organised!

Morning All

We thought that Nick did a brilliant job judging the ‘Anything Goes Competition’ on Wednesday evening, given that there was an unintentional time pressure!

He gave a full feedback and positive construction criticism on each image. Great.

Calendar images

Last call to submit entries for the calendar; many thanks to all who have done so already. Definite deadline – noon on Wednesday 26th April.

Presentation evening

Again, very last call for members to partake in this annual event on Wednesday 17th April. Very shortly we have to give final numbers to Betty and her team. Many thanks to all those who are able to make it!

Events Cup

First destination is to Kendal on Saturday 29th April. Complying with the rules; to participate in and enter into the competition, you must be a member and you must only visit on that day indicated.

A day consists of 24 hours; so, you could start at 1 minute past midnight and then continue until the following midnight!

Attached is a plan of Kendal indicating the boundary of the competition.

There are numerous car parks; a quick check on Google suggests there are at least 16!

Need a lift – car share? If you want to go but struggling with transport of just want to car share to split the cost PLEASE email in and Lewis and Mike will do our best to sort it out.

Wednesday 26th April

After Tim’s presentation we will all be judging and voting on the images submitted for the Garstang Calendar.

So, PLEASE, bring a pen/pencil! We will supply the paper.

You will be asked to judge and score each image between 10 and 20 marks.

All the images will be shown as a slide show first of all, and will then be shown individually.

Out of all the entries we will need to pick the top 36. These images will then be sent to the Arts Centre committee who will then choose the 12 final images for each month of the 2024 calendar.

So please make the effort to get to the meeting on Wednesday, not only to listen to Tim’s talk, but to join in the judging!

AGM

Hopefully you will have noticed that the AGM is to be held soon. This gives you, the members, an opportunity to put forward any ideas or thoughts you may have with regard to the running of your club. If you have any suggestions please email in and we can put it on the agenda. This is your chance to influence the direction of our club to hopefully change and/or improve what we offer!
