May 2025 News

Hello to all.  I hope all is well.  Here is the copy for May.

Hello readers and as I write this, what glorious weather we are having, let’s hope this is not our summer !  We are nearing the end of another season which has been a most successful one. It culminated in a win for Garstang with our annual battle with our link club in New Zealand at Rangiora. There remains only one presentation  to go, this is by Steve Proctor presenting THE WILDSIDE and takes place on Wed. May 7th at 7.30 pm.

Our presentation evening is on  May 21st. when, a meal will be followed by the presentation of certificates along with trophies.  Although this is the last programmed meeting, we are again running our summer course entitled  YOUR CAMERA, LEARN IT , LOVE IT.  for non members

It will run for 4 weeks from  June 25th. and is FREE.  We are aiming at beginners or those with a camera, maybe still in it’s box !  You need to bring it along. We are a very friendly club with members encouraging and helping out each week. If you are thinking of buying one and need some advice, perhaps we can advise you on such a purchase. I will be giving specific details of course content/times etc in the next issue of this magazine so, mark it down in your diary. With very little free in these times without a catch, please avail yourselves of such an opportunity.

Finally, it cannot go unsaid that the success of the club is due to a good team. Firstly to Mike Jenner as the Chairman, who is said to work the 25 hr day on behalf of the club, ably supported by the committee. To the members of GCC who turn up in all weathers and help out whenever asked. A very big Thank You to one and all.  I wish you all, a good summer.

Making Meaningful Photographs
With today’s sophisticated cameras and countless resources available for helping us learn how to use them, making beautiful photographs has never been easier. But is “beautiful” enough? In a world where 3.2 billion images are shared on social media every day, what makes your images worth stopping for? Do they tug at a viewer’s heartstrings? Do they tell an interesting story? Can they make people laugh or think or wonder? Have they anything important to say? In short, do they mean anything?
In this presentation, Kas challenges you to explore these meaning-of-life questions as part of your image-making process, and will inspire you to make more meaningful photographs as you discover the answers.

Morning All

Well, well, another win, our first over the Rangiora Photographic Society of New Zealand!
The final scores were: Garstang: 462 Rangiora: 459 – so only 3 points in it – phew!
I emailed our contact in NZ, Allan, thanking them for taking part and how there were some cracking images from both clubs; I also mentioned a return ‘fixture’ next year, he replied:
Awesome. You took the win and well deserved. As for next year, why not. So that’s sorted for 2026!
Many thanks also to all members who managed to get out and about and tackle the challenge ‘Above and Below.’ Some great images were included in the ‘Show-and Tell.’

Notices:
Committee:
Would you like to join the committee? We are always looking for members to help out with the running of the club, so you would be most welcome!
You don’t have to take an active role, but come along to the meetings and have a voice! We don’t bite, honest!
This coming Wednesday, 26th March, we are having a committee meeting in the Arts Centre from 7pm – if you are interested either email me on info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk or just pop in – it’s no problem!

Challenges:
Thank you, Stan, for your excellent talk last Wednesday on monochrome photography.
So, following Stan’s talk, the next challenge is, as you may have guessed, is monochrome images.
It is an ‘open’ challenge – that is any subject – and the date for the ‘Show-and -Tell’ will be Wednesday 14th May, so plenty of time, but don’t delay, get out and about now the weather is improving and clocks go forward next weekend!
While I’m typing about this challenge, please don’t forget the ‘Alphabet’ challenge – combine 2 challenges in one?

Artificial Intelligence: (AI)
Last Wednesday I did a small talk on AI and demonstrated this by using one of my images and getting it critiqued by AI. A couple of members have asked for the website I used, so it was:
https://chatgpt.com it is free and very fast! As I mentioned I’m not sure how many images you can ask for the AI to critique before it ‘times-you-out’ but it’s a bit of fun, well, at the moment, who knows how it will develop!

Calendar:
Just a gentle reminder about images for the 2026 calendar. Time is ticking on!
Just to repeat:
The calendar used to be Garstang only; however, following on with conversations with Muriel she has now stated that images could not only encompass Garstang but now the surrounding areas to a radius of 5 to 10 miles, maximum; so, this means that the scope has now widened!
Please get out and about, in the fullness of time, so that we can offer her a great selection towards the end of April/ beginning of May.
As mentioned on Wednesday Sue will find out the exact date the Arts Centre committee will require our images. Thanks, Sue.

Events Destinations:
Last Wednesday all members at the club meeting voted on the list of destinations for the 2025 Events Cup – cheers!
However, it’s not too late to vote – so if you missed last Wednesday’s meeting, I have attached the list again. Deadline is mid-night on this coming Tuesday. Just email in on info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk
Please pick the top 10 destinations. Please put a 1 on the destination you would most like to visit and a 10 on your tenth choice.
Why 10? It gives the committee a better range of ideas and the chance not to repeat similar destinations. Also, destinations possibilities for the summer programme.
The final choice will be made by the committee next Wednesday together with dates and days for the 5 months of April, May, June, July and August.

Coffee Morning – Saturday April 12th.
We are running this coffee morning and this is the last coffee morning until September. As usual, I’m asking members to please bring along anything edible for us to sell nearer the time – it all helps to add funds to our coffers!

April Exhibition:
Many thanks to all members who have brought in their prints ready for the coming exhibition.
Maurice has said if anyone still wishes to show any prints please bring them along this Wednesday – although it is a committee meeting, that’s fine.

Early Notice! Wednesday April 9th!
Paul Dunmall is our speaker; ‘Interactive critic night’ A lecture of 2 very different parts.
Part one is part lecture about judging and a competitions part facilitated discussion with the audience, where you have the chance to ask the judge, a chance to air your views on the judging community to a current judge.
Part 2 is about a right to reply; with about 20 PDI’s submitted, he will “judge” them like a competition night, but after his comments, will invite the photographer to ask him about the comments made. The images can be of any type, already been in competitions with bad comments, new images that are bit edgy and not sure if to put them or even just want a comment on pictures.
So: in part 2 I will need about 20 PDI’s for Paul to judge and then giving you a right of reply!
I’m therefore inviting members to submit to me (via info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk) a maximum of 3 PDI’s for Paul to judge.
Please indicate to me the order of preference i.e. 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
I will endeavour to ensure that at least one PDI from each member is ‘judged.’

April 2025 News

Each year, the Club puts on two exhibitions of member’s prints which have been entered for all or any of our internal competitions. The one in September displays which were awarded a !st,  2cnd  or 3rd place in our big 5 ( for more details see the website ) These are held in the Arts Centre.

We begin with our first display which will be open for viewing from April 5th through to May 1st. This consists of images which were not awarded a place and may include prints not having been entered for whatever reason. Without the many prints the competitions would not be viable…..thinking back to my marathon days I never assumed a win as the many thousands in front will testify ! The efforts and the satisfaction of a good print  ( it’s not the winning but the taking part ……..! )

Please give us a visit and why not take the weight off and have some coffee and cake, you will be made most welcome.

I intended to publish the results of our annual battle between ourselves and our colleagues in New Zealand , unfortunately it had to be switched to a later date. Next edition…..!

Also soon to be published , our 5 summer outings to various places of interest, these may be entered into one of our big 5, the Events Cup.

Our programme for April is as follows-

April 2nd.    Kas Stone on  Making Meaningful Photographs  (by way of ZOOM )

..  .. 9th.       Paul Dunmall  CPAGB  QCP  on An Iterchangeable Critic Night.

..   ..16th       the judging of one of the big 5  ANYTHING GOES  Judge  Simon Ray.

..  .. 23rd      Presentation by two of our Members,  Stan Pearson and Lewis Thompson

..  ..30th       A G M.

May 7th        Steve Proctor  on  The Wildside.   ( could this be a walk ? )

Very sad news:
As mentioned by Stan in last Wednesday’s meeting, Chris passed away on Tuesday 18th February at home with his family by his side; Chris was aged 78 years.
The funeral Mass will take place at St. Clare’s Church, Fulwood on Wednesday 5th March at 11.15am, prior to committal at Preston Crematorium.
If you are attending, a touch of red in your attire would be much appreciated. Family flowers only please, donations, if desired, to the ‘British Heart Foundation.’

Wednesday 26th March there will be no meeting – there is a committee meeting on in the evening – sorry!

New Zealand ‘Battle.’
Unfortunately, this ‘Battle’ has been postponed until sometime in March and I have no idea of the reason. From an email I received, and reading between the lines, the images have apparently been judged and whom ever was in charge of ‘putting together’ an AV hasn’t done it! Hey ho, the bacon butties and the fizz will still be available at the appropriate time!

Quiz Teams:
I’m sure you will all be pleased to know that the Charles Flatt intergroup quiz competing for the Charles Flatt Trophy will be held on Saturday 26th April.
We have, currently, entered 2 teams to participate. Each team can have up to 6 people, so that’s a possible 12 members.  If you would like to be part of either team, PLEASE let me know via our website on info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk – currently we have me, Freda, Robin, Sue and Adrian.

Next week I’ll attach the list for the Events Cup for 2025. We have quite a few destinations listed with a small, where necessary, explanation of each idea.
Then, on Wednesday 19th March, during the members evening a vote will take place to determine the actual 5 destinations and during the committee meeting the following week the days and dates will be set. As I have said, we have had quite a few ideas but it’s not too late if you wish to send in more destinations.

Presentation:
Our member, Professor John Griffin, of Lancaster University, is giving a talk next Thursday, 27th February at 2pm, titled ‘Snapshots of Britain’ 1950 to 1970.’ The venue is the library, next to Booths and the admission is £3 to include refreshments.~
This talk is the same that John gave to the members back last year. If you missed it, I can greatly recommend it! In fact, it’s worth seeing it again.

Coffee Duty:
Coffee and tea duty for this coming Wednesday, 26th, is Dave and Barry. Many thanks in advance!

Up and coming programme of events:

Wednesday 26th February: A talk by Tim, “A Trail of Two Oceans.” – A train journey across Africa.

Wednesday 5th March: Tesni Ward: Via Zoom, British Wildlife. Tesni writes: Britian is home to some of the most charismatic wildlife in the world, yet some species can be elusive, making them a challenge to any photographer. This talk covers stories from the field, essential fieldcraft and how to ensure you remain ethical whilst developing your portfolio.

Wednesday 12th March: Humanity Cup judging by Nicki Ellis-Greenwood

Wednesday 19th March: Members Evening: A talk by Stan titled, Monochrome photography. Plus, voting on destinations for the Events Cup and members challenge, show & tell – ‘Above and Below.’

That’s all folks….
Cheers

Mike
