Newsletter 21/09/25

Morning All

Today this newsletter is wholly created by Artificial intelligence!
Well, I thought I might try, but no, it couldn’t compose it – yet!
But, reading between the ‘lines’ of Susie’s talk on Wednesday, this may not be far away; but in the meantime, you’ll have to put up with me!
All the prints are ‘up’ in the Arts Centre – huge thanks to Maurice (who is away but ‘set us up’ with all the prints, extremely well organised!), Elaine, Freda, Lewis and Robin.

Notices:

Competition: L&CPU
I’ve attached a copy of the Annual Club Knockout Competition organised by the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union (L&CPU).
It is, I hope, fairly self-explanatory but the crux is:
It is an inter-club competition; Projected Digital Image (PDI).
Each club entry must consist of:

• 8 images per club

• No more than 2 images per individual

• The first 4 images must come from 4 different photographers

And basically, at the end of the competition the winner is the club with the most points.
Lewis is co-ordinating our entries, so:
A maximum of 2 PDI’s per member sent to Lewis via info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk (subject ‘Club Knockout’), by Saturday 1st November. Lewis will then choose the 8 images to be submitted by us.
If you have any questions chat to Lewis or me at our Wednesday meetings.

Image Critiquing: 29th October
Don’t forget to send in those photos – all info in last week’s newsletter!
All images submitted and shown will be anonymously
How to send them in:
The idea is for any club member to submit a maximum of 3 (ish) images for a constructive critique by Stan and he will guarantee that at least 1, if not 2 images, from each member, will be critiqued.
How to send them in:

  • In an ideal world please send the original image(s) file AND your edit.
  • OR if you are struggling send the original or the edited image

Deadline date: Images in by Wednesday 15th October.
JPEG Images can be sent to the usual email address: info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk and the subject – Image Feedback.
If you are struggling then please ask during the next few meetings or phone Mike on 07340 314408.

Message from Michael:
Just wanted to pass these on, from one of our new members, Anita, who captured AF1 this week.
Cracking shoots too. See attached and can you guess where Anita was?

Message from Daryl Giles – Lytham St Annes PS
Charlie Waite is visiting us on Thursday 30th October, at our usual meeting room, Well Church Hall, St Albans Road, St Annes, FY8 1UZ
Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30 start.
I can offer you 10 places at £5 each if any of your members are interested.
Ideally, I need to know their names by the end of September so if you could send me the list by 1st October, I’d be grateful.
For those not familiar with Charlie, he is a world renowned landscape photographer, the founder of Light and Land and a very entertaining speaker.

Daryl Giles
If you are interested and wish to book a place, please email ASAP on info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk and I will pass your name onto Daryl. Obviously, if the demand is there it will be the first 10 that get a place!

Coffee Morning
Please don’t forget! The camera club is hosting a coffee morning, in the Arts Centre, on Saturday 27th September.
As usual, we are looking for cakes etc to sell on the morning, it’s going to be busy, so, please get baking/cooking and contribute something edible and let Mike know so we can organise accordingly.
Many thanks to those who have contacted me so far – ta!

Message from Salina Somalya
Salina is Yasmin’s mother. Yasmin was one of our ‘guests’ on the 4 week Camera Course we ran during the summer months.
She says: ‘Yasmin was wondering if she would be able to view any of the photos taken of her on the last day’ – that was the portrait session and images were taken in the Art Centre courtyard and maybe down by the river.
If you took any images that you would like to share of Yasmin, please forward them on to me at info@garstangcameraclub.co.uk and I will forward them on to Salina – cheers!
I have had some images from members but please send me more if you have them!

It’s beginning to feel a lot like………. sorry!
I think Christmas began in Aldi on September 7th; there is so much ‘stuff’ on the shelves, including mince pies, that they have hardly any room for their Easter Eggs!
This year, on Wednesday 17th December, we are repeating the ‘PPP’ – Pies, Peas and Puddings Supper at only £10 pp.
We are having Hamlets pies and puddings will be a mixture of party type desserts and the full menu in a later newsletter.
Freda is now beginning to coordinating and beginning to collect names! Open to all members and their respective wives/husbands/partners etc – please support the club and I’m sure there will be some kind of entertainment – our thinking caps are on! If anyone has an idea……!
Also, we will need, please, some prizes for the raffle – any donations will be very gratefully received!

Coffee duty:
Coffee/tea duty for Wednesday 17th September is Shelly and Lewis – thank you, in advance.

Up and coming programme of events:

Wednesday 24th September – Members Evening: a talk by one of our members, John, on colour photos from 1950s-1970s. John says “I collect old Kodachrome slides and scan them to get an insight into social history.”
This talk is a follow-up on a previous presentation from John, last August (2024), and it proved to be very interesting! Make a note in your diary!
Plus: we will be voting on the images to be submitted for the 3 ‘Battles’ in 2025/26. Thanks here to Stan for organising and co-ordinating the images.

Wednesday 1st October – Colin Balls: Sri Lanka by rail’. Colin writes: “Sri Lanka by rail is a tour of Sri Lanka on a special steam train stopping off at various places of interest. The journey goes onto a car trip to Yarla National Park with plenty of wildlife. The presentation is a video movie.

Wednesday 15th October – Our first internal club competition ‘The Events Cup.’ This will be judged by Richard Nicholson.

Afternoon All

I think our opening night proved to be a success thanks to the 4 talks! So big thank you to Freda (Badgers), Paul (dog agility), Stan (Mike photos, equipment for loan/sale and John’s Garden) and John (printing).
Also, thanks to all 19 members who submitted an image each to the Opening Night Competition! The results, as they say, are in and the winner will be revealed during next Wednesday’s meeting!

Plein Air Painting Competition
Garstang woke up to the smell of linseed oil, wild ambition, and a suspicious number of folding easels on Saturday, as the annual Plein Air Painting Competition descended upon our cobbled streets and sheep/cow-studded fields. Over 30 artists from around the area arrived, brushes in hand and egos neatly packed in canvas bags.
Garstang was awash with colour, creativity, and questionable hat choices as more than 30 artists descended on the town for the fourth annual “Paint Garstang” event and many locals watched in awe (and occasionally confusion) as painters captured everything from the town centre to Greenhalgh Castle, via the river Wyre.
Artists spent the day thoughtfully squinting at buildings, holding their thumbs in the air for mysterious reasons, and attempting to avoid painting directly into the sun. Once complete, they marched their masterpieces to Garstang Arts Centre, resisting the urge to “accidentally” smudge each other’s work on the way.
Adding to the creative chaos, ukulele band Buzz Cadillac and the Lightning Rods (yes, really) provided courtyard entertainment. Front man Andy Stuart led the musical charge with a set that had toes tapping and hips swaying.
Judge Hazel Booth had the unenviable task of picking a winner, but praised the high standard of entries, even the one that looked suspiciously like a sandwich. The event was rounded off with a prize ceremony hosted by Sheila Tearle of the Arts Centre, who heroically kept things moving despite one attendee loudly claiming their painting had been robbed of a prize and was, in fact, “better than Monet.”
Taking the top prize — for the second time running — was the unstoppable Lori Shaw, whose stunning depiction of Garstang’s old Town Hall and Market House reminded judges what good perspective actually looks like. Rumours of her using magical paintbrushes remain unconfirmed.
The weather stayed fair for the competition and I managed to get a few photos of most of the artists except for a few outliers though I’m sure they were visited by others! I was accompanied for a very short period by no other than Andy Stuart, of ‘hare’ and musicality fame, who proceeded to take a photo of me photographing an artist – I returned the ‘favour’ later!
I did here that Frank and Mike (Pattern) were also out-and-about but accidentally evaded them!
Anyone who took photos and wants to share them please send them to me and I’ll forward them on to whomever.

Morning All

Well, 15 of us ventured, (eventually!), to St. Annes on Wednesday evening and I can say with some confidence that we had a good time, some fun, a laugh or two and no rain but unfortunately, again, no sunset, though Robin managed somehow to conjure one up on his Canon R5! Is there nothing that R5 will not do Robin?
Thanks to all who managed to get out and about on these final 3, (of 6), summer outings which will almost certainly be repeated next summer but with different destinations, I hope!
Please don’t forget folks, bring your photos, even the not so successful ones, to the next club meeting on Wednesday 20th August ‘cos it’s ‘Show-and-Tell’ time!

Morning All

Well, we were 10 strong in Morecambe last Wednesday and thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company, humour and exercise!
Unfortunately, the weather didn’t play ball and it was basically overcast but without rain. Still, as Rhona pointed out, we ‘did’ 6000 steps – and still that elusive decent sun set; well, maybe next Wednesday!

Notices:
Talking of next Wednesday, 6th August, if you remember we had to cancel the River Brock ‘outing’ so instead we will be visiting;

St. Annes
Details:
Meet at Fairhaven Car Park at 7pm, free after 6pm. Fairhaven Road Car Park, Fairhaven Rd, Lytham Saint Annes FY8 1NW
Car sharing? Meet at Kirkland & Catterall Memorial Hall at 6.10pm to leave at 6.15pm.; 2 miles, 40 mins.
Weather: BBC weather App! – sunny intervals and a light wind, 19 degrees. Sun sets at 9pm. No predictions!!
Tides: High tide at 9.58am, low tide at 4.17pm, high tide at 10.16 pm.
Google says: St. Annes in Lancashire offers diverse photographic opportunities, from its beautiful sandy beach and iconic pier to the tranquil Fairhaven Lake and vibrant town centre. Consider capturing the natural beauty of the coastline, the lively atmosphere of the promenade, and the unique architectural details of the area.
There’s St Annes Pier Boat Jetty, I would suggest wellies ‘cos the tide will be coming in!

Lytham St Annes Photographic Society (LSAPS) from Andy Ogilvie
They extend a warm invitation to all our members and friends to the 75th anniversary of its annual exhibition of our members’ photographic work. It features 300 prints and 300 projected digital images.

Liverpool
One for your diary and definite consideration! Many thanks to Stan!Stan has put together a club outing to Liverpool when the planned visit will be in September on any Saturday after Saturday 6th Sept, and when the forecast is for no rain.
There will be, in theory, 3 visits planned, below is the first visit. The other 2 will probably be in November and then in January 2026.
Please bring your mobile and please note, no tripods – not allowed in many indoor areas.
A standard lens 15-50mm (approx.) is good. A wide-angle lens would also be very useful. I have a 10-18mm that anyone can borrow – it will fit Canon DSLR, A-PSC cameras.
If you take a photograph of anyone and they object, offer to either email them the photograph or delete

Itinerary
Visit any Saturday after Saturday 6th Sept when the forecast is for no rain.
Train times:
Depart Preston    9.28  Arrive Liverpool 10.20
Depart Liverpool  16.12  Arrive Preston 16.58
Train times to be confirmed closer to departure date.
Approx durations
St Johns Beacon 5 mins

Liverpool 1 underground car park   45 mins

Total: 5 hrs approx.

Security guards inside Liverpool 1 shopping and car park may politely object to you taking photographs. So, we need to look inconspicuous. Take a small camera case. I have 3 without the words ‘Canon’ etc written on the bag and strap! Anyone can borrow. When not taking a photograph keep your camera in the bag. Split into 2 groups. Take photographs either by yourself or in pairs. If in pairs it should be preferably one male and one female.

Morning All
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s 4 week camera course a success!
We couldn’t have zoomed, panned, or focused without you so, thanks for helping us keep things in frame, in focus, and (mostly) in control!
We even managed without electric power last Wednesday, though cake and water at the end sounded a bit hollow! – better than bread and water though!
For the record, out of the 20 ‘guests’ we started with only one went missing without trace!
If anyone has any reflections, thoughts or suggestions about the course please email in or chat to me, Stan, Elaine or Freda over the next few weeks; any ideas gratefully received.

Notices:
Summer Outings:
Following on from the camera course we have on:

Wednesday 23rd July – A visit to Brockholes Nature Reserve:
Just off Junction 31 of the M6, Preston, Lancashire, PR5 OAG
Weather forecast: looking a bit ‘iffy’ at the moment, coat maybe required!
Sunset at 21.23.
Car park – open daily 6am to 9pm; The actual Nature Reserve is free but there is a charge of £5 per car.
Car sharing? Please meet at Kirkland Memorial Hall (The Avenue, Churchtown, Preston PR3 0HS) at 6pm.
We then leave at 6.05pm to arrive at Brockholes about 6.30pm – A6 road works etc permitting, of course!
As you can see from the above info the car park shuts at 9pm but that gives us a good 2 hrs 15 mins there.
However, you can park ‘outside’ the reserve – map attached, thanks Stan – and then walk into the reserve, so no possibility of getting shut in, your choice!

Events Cup:
Reminder!
The last Events Cup destination is Downham Village and Clitheroe, 31 miles – 52 minutes. The 2 visits are on Tuesday 12th August OR Saturday 16th August.
Details for this destination will be in a future newsletter.

Challenges:
Just another reminder!
